Tour Itinerary
Reykjavik pickup
Pickup begins in the great Reykjavik area between 08:30 and 09:00. We go between hotels where applicable and Bus Stops to pick up passengers for the day. When pickup is concluded and everyone is onboard, we departure for the tour.
Thingvellir national park
Thingvellir National Park, a gem with immense historical and geological significance. This is where Iceland’s parliament was established in 930 A.D., with thirty ruling chiefs gathering here annually to discuss the island's laws until Danish rule began. It’s also where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, allowing us to “walk between continents” at this unique location. Adding to the experience, we’ll take a short hike to the picturesque Öxararfoss waterfall, one of Iceland's few human-made waterfalls. The Öxará River was redirected in the 10th century to provide water for parliamentary assemblies.
Deildartunguhver
Deildartunguhver is Europe's most powerful hot spring, a wild force of nature unleashing a torrent of 180 liters (380 pints) of steaming water every second. Its boiling waters surge relentlessly at a blistering 97°C (207°F), creating an awe-inspiring and treacherous spectacle—danger lurks if you venture too close. Yet, daring explorers need not fear, for sturdy wooden walkways and viewing decks guide you safely past this fiery marvel, offering a front-row seat to nature’s raw energy.
Beneath this bubbling giant, an unstoppable force powers Iceland’s homes—one pipeline stretches 34 kilometers (21 miles) to Borgarnes, while another winds 64 kilometers (40 miles) to Akranes. So, if you're taking a shower or bath within this vast radius, you've practically soaked in the waters of Deildartunguhver—an incredible connection to one of the planet’s most electrifying geothermal wonders.
Hraunfossar and Barnafossar
Nestled within Iceland’s wild, volcanic landscape, Hraunfossar flows through a mesmerizing lava field born from a mighty eruption beneath the icy depths of Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier. These waterfalls plunge from jagged, less porous rock ledges into the Hvítá river, creating a tapestry of roaring water and ancient fire beneath your feet.
Nearby, a less tranquil but equally captivating spectacle awaits—Barnafoss. This fierce cascade crashes through a narrow, rocky gorge with relentless, frothing power. Here, legend weaves a story of tragedy, where an ancient stone bridge once spanned the turbulent waters. Two curious boys from a nearby farm, eager to catch up with their parents at church, dared to cross. Overcome by dizziness from its dizzying height, they fell into the tumult below and drowned.
Legends tell of a grieving mother, who cursed the bridge with an ancient rune, condemning any who crossed to meet the same fate. Later, an earthquake shattered both the cursed bridge and its dark magic, leaving behind a name that echoes with bittersweet memories—Children’s Falls—a place where nature’s wild spirit and ancient stories collide in spectacular fashion.
